By the cross, we mean Jesus' atoning work or payment for our sins; His death, burial and resurrection. You may have heard it referred to the as gospel or good news. We recognize that Jesus' command to make disciples is only possible because of the cross.
So why the cross? Because we are sinners, separated from God, and need a Savior. Becoming a disciple of Jesus begins with realizing that you are a sinner. "For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). None of us can measure up to God's standard by ourselves.
Because you are a sinner, you are condemned to death. "For the wages [payment] of sin is death." (Romans 6:23). This includes eternal separation from God in Hell.
But God loved you so much He gave His only Son, Jesus, to bear your sin , die in your place and provide a way for forgiveness. "God made Him [Jesus, who knew no sin] to be sin for us, that in Him we might become the righteousness of God." (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Jesus had to shed His blood and die. "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." (Romans 5:8). Although we cannot understand how, God said my sins and your sins were laid upon Jesus and He died in our place. He became our substitute.
So, what must you do to be saved? "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved." (Acts 16:31)
Simply recognize that you are a sinner in need of a Savior and believe on Him as the one who bore your sin, died in your place, was buried, and whom God resurrected. "For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." (Romans 10:13)
You too can share our focus, the focus of glorifying God. You do that by becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. The only way to do that is through the glorious cross of Christ.
